From Phil Stout, programmer extraordinaire, Schulke Radio Productions...
"SRP [Schulke Radio Productions] commissioned the first custom Beautiful Music tracks specifically for client stations in 1973. Conductor/arranger
s interviewed for this project included LeRoy Holmes, Marty Gold and Charles Gerhardt. Holmes was selected, and he elected to record the sessions in London. The first titles recorded were standards that were not available in full string orchestral versions at that time. Arrangers included Glen Osser and Pete Moore.
Jim Schulke and I had planned to continue the custom sessions using Marty Gold next but the BBC material became available, and we locked it up as soon as possible.
As to instructions, etc., all of the titles were selected based on what I felt the format needed in those days...no blaring saxes or intrusive brass. Tracks were to be on the short side time-wise. I left the arranging up to LeRoy and his people...but not before we all sat down and listened to lots of Faith, Mantovani, etc. Of course, LeRoy knew precisely what we were aiming for.
Here is a list of the very first SRP custom tracks. Keep in mind that I do not have a record as to exactly what dates or sessions they were from. However I do know that the first sessions took place in the Fall of 1973 in London. SRP did not record custom group vocals until we teamed up with the BBC."
